THE USEFUL PART
Agree on the checklist first, remove belongings, then leave time to review the result before handover.
Start with the home you need to hand over
Move-out cleaning is easier to plan when you separate packing, repairs, removal, and cleaning. A checklist can keep those jobs in order, but the final plan should reflect your home and any written handover requirements you have been given.
If you are arranging a move-out clean in Memphis, share the move date, the likely condition of the empty home, and the areas you want included. A cleaning request alone does not confirm an appointment or guarantee a particular inspection result. Get the scope and timing agreed before relying on them.
Before the cleaning day: clear the sequence
Aim to have belongings and unwanted items removed before the final clean. Explain if furniture, boxes, or moving crews will still be present. Otherwise, the cleaner may be working around objects that are moved again later, leaving newly exposed areas outside the original plan.
Check when repairs or other work will finish and arrange access through an agreed private method. Confirm that the home will have the utilities needed for the planned tasks. Keep keys, documents, and anything that should not be discarded clearly separated from waste.
- List the rooms and any areas excluded from cleaning.
- Share written cleaning requirements rather than paraphrasing them from memory.
- Identify remaining belongings, maintenance issues, and unfinished work.
- Confirm access, timing, utilities, and who to contact with questions.
A handover sequence with room to breathe
- Agree the scope
Share the handover checklist, rooms and any interior requests.
- Clear the space
Finish agreed repairs and remove belongings before the final clean.
- Clean with access
Confirm utilities, entry arrangements and a contact for questions.
- Walk through
Compare completed work with the agreed list while access is available.
Kitchen: name the interiors as well as the surfaces
Discuss counters, the sink, suitable floors, and appliance exteriors first. Then list refrigerator, oven, cabinet, and drawer interiors separately if you want them included. Do not assume the phrase move-out cleaning automatically covers all of those areas.
Empty the relevant spaces before a requested interior clean. Tell the provider about delicate finishes, unusual appliances, or surfaces requiring specific care. For refrigerator or oven requests, agree how preparation will be handled and follow the appliance manufacturer's instructions rather than improvising a process on moving day.
Bathrooms: describe the condition clearly
List the toilets, sinks, tubs or showers, mirrors, accessible surfaces, and floors you want addressed. Remove toiletries and personal belongings so it is clear which spaces are available. Note any drawers or cabinets you want considered as additional tasks.
Mention visible buildup or a problem area when you request the estimate. Staining, damaged finishes, leaks, or repair work should be discussed separately; cleaning should not be expected to restore a surface that needs maintenance. Photos can help explain the condition without guessing what caused it.
Bedrooms and living spaces: look beyond the open floor
Once belongings are removed, walk each room and identify accessible ledges, trim, shelving, closet floors, and other details you would like covered. Ask about interior glass, blinds, and specialty floor care individually, because those requests can change the scope.
Check areas exposed by moving furniture and flag anything difficult to reach. Discuss heavy-item moving before the visit. For your own touch-ups, the CDC recommends suitable cleaning products for each surface and following label instructions.
Keep outside and specialty work on a separate list
A garage, balcony, patio, exterior window, or storage area can be easy to overlook while counting bedrooms and bathrooms. Identify these spaces in the request instead of assuming they are part of an indoor cleaning plan. Ask whether they can be included or need a different provider.
Also mention bulky rubbish, renovation debris, pest concerns, or unusual contamination before booking. Describing the condition allows the provider to assess the request and explain what falls within the work they can agree to do.
Finish with a walkthrough, not a last-minute scramble
After cleaning, compare the result with the agreed checklist. Allow time to discuss a missed included task while access is still available. Keep any required handover documentation organized, and handle repairs or property questions through the appropriate contact.
For the estimate, send room counts, approximate size if known, the home’s condition, your moving timeline, and the interior or specialty requests on your list. A specific request makes the cleaning plan easier to confirm and leaves fewer decisions for the day you are trying to move.
